Photo Competition

Young people from across Gippsland entered our competition showing off their ‘Picturesque Gippsland’ and matching it with a caption on why the place was special to them. The winning shot was by Richie Southerton with a beautiful image of McKenzie River Rainforest shot in Bemm River Scenic Reserve in East Gippsland. 

2019 AGM at Gurneys Cider

Old hands and new faces got together to plan our calendar of events for 2019. Gurneys cider put on a show for us, with perfect weather, incredible views to the Prom and local cider and produce. We chatted about last year’s successes/fails/learnings, what we wanted to do for the road ahead and elected a new committee of 10 for 2019.

Weed Mapping and Mountain Biking

Location: Colquhoun regional park, east gippsland

We were blessed with some pretty special weather as we mapped weeds and mountain biked in the beautiful Colquhoun Regional Park .We worked with DELWP to help locate weed species along three sections of the Gippsland Lakes Discovery trail, spent the afternoon riding the trails of Colquhoun MTB Park and then finished the night off around the campfire at Log Crossing Campground. A special thanks to Sarah from Venture Out In Lakes Entrance who supplied us with the bikes and Jacinta Nelsson from the Gippsland Mountain Bike Club for leading us through the tracks.

Powlett River Mouth Beach Clean-up

After seeing how littered with rubbish the mouth of the Powlett River was, we quickly got organised and ran this day. In total 25 vols removed about 244 kg of rubbish from the beach, river edge, sand dunes and shrubs. We picked up beer cans, bottles, micro-plastics, plastic wrapping, fishing line and lots of other pieces of rubbish. Afterwards we celebrated our work with a BBQ and delicious brownies.

Billy Creek Tree Planting

We got down and dirty (and weeeeetttttttt! YAY GIPPSLAND!) helping Yinnar/ Yinnar South Landcare Group plant out a site along the Billy Creek. The steep site had been smashed by the recent bushfires, so was eroding away into the creek. We were able to help plant 300 trees and guards them with some industrial proof guards to stop grazing animals.

UNIFY Gathering Tree Planting Day

We worked with UNIFY Gathering heavy metal festival to plant and guard 1500 trees on the sheep farm where the festival is held in Tarwin Lower. The 40 volunteers included lots and lots of new faces, including heaps of UNIFY punters who had never been to tree planting before but wanted to help protect the festival site. A special thanks to Bass Coast Landcare for their hardcore support of the day.

Ryanston Tree Planting Day

Legendary effort by 20 volunteers to help landholders Amy and Brent plant 1400 trees along a creek in Ryanston. We finished the planting with a good ol’ fashioned #LandcareBBQ then headed to Paul Speirs’ property who has been revegetating his property for over 30 years! Paul gave us a tour and explained how he has seen huge benefits on his property for both nature and his cattle since planting his native forest.
